A Great Little Book

This book comes to mind this morning as I return from the Center High School greenhouse where hundreds of plants grown by the CHS Life Skills students are now looking for the perfect spot to spend the rest of their summer.

Expect to meet only the most serious of petal pushers this New Year's Day on Troost Avenue at 11AM. That's when we'll meet to bury the last of our bulbs at TOT's annual January 1st planting event.

This year we're teaming to plant tulips with the KCATA (at 18th St. & Troost)...that's next door to the ATA's headquarters, so finding something liquid and hot to warm your mittens is most assuredly in your future.

Art Deco Stained Glass At The Holy Name?

Inspired by nature forms, the stained glass at the Holy Name uses only the regenerative colors of health, healing and peace.

Preserving this art is essential to our community.

Yesterday I was able to tour the interior of this church at 23rd and Benton Blvd. I was simply amazed by the architectural purity and beauty of the interior in this gothic revival building.

It is one of the most important church interiors in our city.

It has been poorly treated and, of course, it ought to be saved.

Many thanks to all of you who supported our recent plant sale at Center High School. Because of you, the CHS Poetry Club Write Now will be able to host many more Poetry Slams next year. And that's good because poems are important!

We are also grateful to the George Harrison Memorial Foundation who donated the gazillions of seeds, flats and Pro-Mix to our CHS Greenhouse Project this year making us now ready to blanket Troost Avenue (and its surrounding neighborhoods) with this spectacular native flower.

And, we appreciated the help from Rockhurst University students and Ms. Evans class too which helped us plant and transplant over 100,000 seedlings now looking for good homes.

We kind of expect that we won't have enough TOT volunteers to plant all of our 100,000+ plants on our Volunteer Planting Day, Saturday May 30th. So, starting today we're GIVING them away to anyone who believes in

Just please plant them kind of close to Troost Avenue...like within the city limits if you know what we mean and that includes the Westside Beautification team, the Troost Folks, our friends on Benton Boulevard and ALL the rest of you hopeful souls in between.

We need to know SOON how many of you are going to sign up to VOLUNTEER for our Annual New Year's Day Tulip Plantings. Because only if you tell us SOON, can we be sure to have enough tulip bulbs on hand for each of you to plant your one square foot of tulips.

A Serious Shovel Shortage

When Tulips on Troost decided to plant 75,000 tulips to celebrate the UMKC’s 75th birthday, not even the event organizers expected over 600 student volunteers to sign up to participate. Add to those numbers all the UMKC alumni, faculty, staff and community volunteers planning to plant tulips on Troost Avenue this Saturday and you end up with…One Very Serious & Severe Shovel Shortage.

With more still signing up on the website UMKC Student Life to volunteer for this Saturday’s record breaking tulip planting event, Tulips on Troost is shamefully shilling for shovels all day today and tomorrow, the final two planning days prior to planting 75,000 tulip bulbs (and 75 trees) this Saturday, October 4th between 7:30AM and Noon.

IF YOU OWN A GARDEN TROWEL, SPADE OR SHOVEL and can loan or donate them to the cause, event organizers are asking you to drop them off today and tomorrow at Ideal Garment located at 4518 Troost Avenue. (Call 816-361-6825 for additional contact help.)

Should you want to DONATE YOURSELF and volunteer for the cause, it all starts at 7:30AM this Saturday at the UMKC University Playhouse located by the UMKC University Center at 50th and Holmes.

Properly marked tools (with the owner’s last name and telephone number) will be ready for pick up at the same location on Sunday, October 5th.

Because adding GREEN to Kansas City is what UMKC's Community Service Day 2008 is all about. Join us on Saturday, October 4th for the biggest Tulips on Troost planting date ever. We'll have 75,000 tulip bulbs and 75 trees there ready to plant and so, we'll need 1,000 volunteers to work 2 hours each to get the job accomplished. It all happens between 8AM and Noon on Saturday, 10/04/2008. Everyone in the community is welcome! Call (816) 235-1407 to register yourself and your family and friends then meet at the University Playhouse at 7:45 AM on the 4th for a short kick-off celebration.

THE FACTS:

$30.00 will purchase 1,472,000 Black Eyed Susan seeds which, if you ask us, is perhaps the best damn "weed" in the Mid-west!

Weed, you understand, is code for Native Plant.

1,472,000 Black Eyed Susan seeds will cover 36,800 square feet of ground next year with some very cheerful flowers.

Black Eyed Susans are also the host plant of Silvery Checkerspot Butterfly Caterpillars.

While I don't have a clue how many square feet of soil we can cover on 10 miles of Troost Avenue with Black Eyed Susans,
or how many Silvery Checkerspot Butterflies it will take to get anybody's attention, it sounds totally worth finding out.

So much is happening.

First, June '07 brought us the Traveling Wilburys and now, in October '07, Apple goes digitial with the complete George on iTunes.

Eric and Pattie both are publishing their biographies just in time, I suppose, for Martin Scorsese to begin work on his authorized documentary film about George.

Then, Joshua Green writes and talks about his own mystical George journey as Harrison's Aston Martin goes up for auction this month.

Even our own Kansas City Symphony has gotten into the act with a Magical Mystery Tour tribute concert this week!

Not feeling at all left out, we decided to book our own Harrison tribute concert and memorial garden fund-raiser in Kansas City, Missouri on October 18, 2008. We're calling it G and stay tuned because we'll be posting all the exciting news about G here as it happens!

A Memorial Tree Gets Vandalized in Liverpool

The Liverpool Echo reported last week (the link has disappeared) that an English oak, located in the peace garden of St. George's Hall (planted by some school children as a memorial to Harrison just six days after his death in November 2001) has recently been stripped of its bark by vandals and may die. It is "one of a number of trees" in this garden to suffer this fate, so it is likely the vandals may not have known of the symbolic value of this memorial tree which they attacked. Nevertheless, it would be a poignant loss considering Harrison's passion for gardens and trees.

And, while on the subject of trees, it is our opinion that George would probably think a book being published this week is a waste of them.

Probably you are going to read it anyway but, if you use the link from here, at least a percentage of your purchase will go to support the George Harrison Memorial Garden. Perhaps you'll even be inspired to plant your own tree in memory of George.
